This talk will focus on four main axes:
1) How is the United States changing under the Trump era?
Not only through personnel changes or slogans, but through deeper shifts in strategic priorities, modes of exercising power, and the way America positions itself in relation to the rest of the world.
2) What “historical templates” of U.S. foreign policy are influencing Trump’s approach?
Historically, U.S. foreign policy has often followed recurring patterns: expanding influence, building alliances, establishing order, and restructuring adversaries. The key question is: Is Trump “breaking” those patterns or “reusing” them in a new form?
3) For smaller and developing countries like Vietnam: where do the risks lie, and how should they prepare?
In an international environment full of variables, smaller countries often face a double risk: being swept into great-power competition, and being forced to adjust strategy with limited room to maneuver.
The discussion will point toward key principles: reading long-term trends, identifying core national interests, strengthening autonomy, and preparing long-range scenarios.
4) The role of anti-war voices in this context
From a historical perspective, anti-war movements are not only moral positions, they are also social forces that can influence national choices, especially when war and military intervention leave long-term consequences far beyond initial calculations.

Peter Kuznick is Professor of History at American University (Washington, D.C., USA) and Director of the Nuclear Studies Institute—an academic center focused on nuclear history and the political and social consequences of the age of weapons of mass destruction. He is the co-author (with Oliver Stone) of The Untold History of the United States, which includes a 12-part documentary series aired on Showtime and the accompanying book of the same title, widely recognized as an effort to re-read modern U.S. history from a critical perspective and in dialogue with world history. For decades, Peter Kuznick has engaged in both academic and public work on topics such as science and politics, the Cold War, nuclear history, and the structural foundations of America’s foreign-policy choices.
